Word
deviated septum
Meanings
A misalignment of the nasal septum that can partially block airflow through one or both nostrils.
Definition
A deviated septum is a condition in which the wall between the nostrils is off-center, making breathing through the nose harder.
A deviated septum happens when the thin wall of cartilage and bone inside the nose is not straight. This can narrow one nasal passage and reduce airflow. It may cause nasal congestion, noisy breathing, or frequent nosebleeds. Some people are born with it, and others develop it after an injury.
